Willie J. Campbell – Be Cool

Blue Heart Records

15 Tracks – 69 minutes

In his final musical journey, the late Willie J. Campbell presents "Be Cool," a poignant and soulful tribute to a lifetime immersed in blues, roots, and rock. Born in Detroit and shaped by the Motown era, Campbell's musical evolution took him from the iconic Motown bass lines to the heart of the blues, and his legacy lives on through this remarkable album.

The cover, featuring the Huntington Beach pier, reflects Campbell's sanctuary—a place of solace and profound connection. Married to Lisa, who cites the pier as a source of deep spiritual resonance for Willie, the album title, "Be Cool," encapsulates a phrase he frequently used, capturing the essence of his laid-back yet impactful musical approach.

Campbell's illustrious career saw him contribute his bass talents to renowned bands such as The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The James Harman Band, The Mannish Boys, and The Proven Ones. Despite facing the challenges of ALS, a terminal illness that ultimately claimed his life on December 17, 2022, Campbell's musical spirit endured.

The album, recorded just eight weeks before his passing, stands as a testament to his resilience and enduring passion. With Kid Ramos on guitar, Brian Templeton on vocals, harmonica, and lead vocals, Jimi Bott on drums, and Brooks Milgate on keyboards forming the core group, a constellation of guest performers pays homage to Campbell's legacy.

Sugaray Rayford kicks off the journey with a fervent vocal performance on "You Better Let Go," tackling the pitfalls of materialism. The album unfolds with a mix of original compositions and thoughtfully selected covers, including a rendition of Los Lobos' "This Time" featuring David Hidalgo and Kim Wilson.

Janiva Magness delivers an emotionally charged vocal on the slow blues of "Can't Stay Away," showcasing the depth of feeling woven into Campbell's farewell album. The instrumental "Docksidin'" grants space for Willie's bass to shine, accompanied by the groovy rhythms of Jimi Bott and the sliding B3 of Brooks Milgate.

A collective of accomplished guitarists, including Anson Funderburgh, Mike Morgan, and Shawn Pittman, collaborates on "My Fault," infusing a Rolling Stones vibe into the Rod Stewart classic. The journey continues through a diverse soundscape, from gospel-inspired tunes like "Forever Shall Be" to the upbeat R&B flair of "Standby," featuring Sugar Ray Rayford.

The album seamlessly transitions from rocking blues tracks like "She's A Twister" to the gritty narrative of "One Man Chain Gang" with Jimmie Wood on vocals. Each song is a testament to Campbell's versatility and enduring passion for the blues.

Kim Wilson returns for a rendition of Huey P. Smith's "You Can't Stop Her," a rock 'n' roll gem, followed by the heartfelt ballad "Use as Needed," featuring Peter Green's instrumental "Albatross" as a fitting conclusion.

In the liner notes, Willie leaves us with a poignant message: "Love fully in the moment. Enjoy everyone and everything that you can, while you can." "Be Cool" stands not just as an album but as a powerful tribute to Willie J. Campbell's enduring talents and the deep connections forged through his music.

Rest in peace, Willie—your musical legacy lives on through this heartfelt farewell.
