The Hurricane Party – CAT 2

Tall and Mean Records

12 tracks – 46 minutes Brace yourself for a sonic hurricane as The Hurricane Party, hailing from the storm-prone coasts of Richmond, Virginia, releases their latest album, "CAT 2." The band captures the essence of a hurricane party—an event where resilience meets revelry, and they bring the high-energy celebration to every track of this 12-song album.

The Hurricane Party's dynamic lead vocals, shared between Jenny "Buttafly" Vazquez and Rocky Pleasants, lead the charge in a musical whirlwind. With Rocky also contributing to songwriting alongside Rob Marlowe, the band is a carefully curated ensemble, including Matt Walton on guitar, Noah Boyle on bass, and Kelly Strawbridge on drums, keyboards, and percussion.

The album kicks off with the self-titled track, "Hurricane Party," delivering a funk-infused introduction and setting the tone for the lively gathering within the storm. "I'm Alive in the Night" follows, narrating tales of bar-hopping and street parties against a salsa rhythm, capturing the essence of the vibrant chaos that ensues.

Buttafly takes the spotlight in the duet "Hey, That's My Jam," where a funky piano and guesting horn players add layers to the musical feast. The first cover, Cracker's "Nothing To Believe In," brings an 80s-style rocker vibe, setting the stage for a diverse musical journey.

The blues classic "Small Waist" from The Nighthawks gets a Hurricane Party makeover with Mark Wenner joining on harmonica. The torch song "The Flame of Love" lets Buttafly shine, accompanied by Matt Walton's soulful guitar work on a 1939 Martin D18.

"Monster Movie" adds a spooky twist with Rocky's strained vocals and a guest appearance by Rob Marlowe on guitar. The funk continues with a rendition of Mother's Finest's "Truth'll Set You Free," featuring Buttafly's commanding vocals and Matt's fiery guitar licks.

A tribute to the soulful Barry White comes to life in "The Barry White Song," where each verse is sung by different members, creating a funky ensemble. "Underdog," a cover of Sly and the Family Stone's classic, keeps the party vibes flowing with Kelli taking the lead vocals.

Buttafly returns to the forefront in "You Gave Up on Us," a torch song recorded with added intensity on a sweltering day, showcasing her vocal prowess. The album concludes with "The Fireplace," a horn-infused track that blends guitar and keyboards under Kelli's rhythmic command.

If you're a funk enthusiast seeking a musical storm to heat up your party, look no further than The Hurricane Party and their infectious "CAT 2." This album is a testament to the band's ability to infuse diverse influences into a cohesive, high-energy celebration that will have you dancing through the storm.
