Richard Ashby's "Arkadia Blues": A Blues Odyssey with Jazz and Funk Infusions

New Zealand-born musician Richard Ashby takes listeners on a musical journey through the deep south, not of the United States but of his homeland, in his latest release, "Arkadia Blues." Now based in Sydney, Ashby showcases his versatile talents as a performer, composer, and educator, with a particular passion for jazz, blues, world, and popular music.

"Arkadia Blues" comprises eight original instrumentals, born out of Ashby's creativity during the challenging times of the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 and 2021. Released in December, the album offers a diverse palette of sounds rooted in blues but infused with influences from jazz, funk, and even country. A solo endeavor, Ashby handles all the instruments on the album, showcasing his multi-faceted musical skills.

The opening track, "Straight 8 Strut," sets the tone with a traditional blues-rock vibe reminiscent of the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. Ashby's guitar work introduces a solid foundation for what's to come. "Rumba Numba" follows, injecting a light and bouncy beat into the mix, demonstrating Ashby's ability to shift dynamics.

"Shoo Fly" returns to the traditional blues-rock territory, with Ashby layering in an organ accompaniment for added depth. The title track, "Arkadia Blues," pays homage to guitar great Danny Gatton, presenting an older rock style that adds a nostalgic touch to the album.

Slowing the tempo down, "It's A Vibe" introduces jazzy runs, showcasing a different facet of Ashby's musical proficiency. The funk-inspired "Bedford Row" maintains the jazz influence, with Ashby crediting John Scofield as a key inspiration for his guitar work on this track.

"Let's Boogaloo" is a delightful nod to the Boogaloo music style that gained popularity in the 1960s, fusing Latin music with Doo-Wop and R&B. Ashby's interpretation adds a contemporary twist, continuing the album's exploration of diverse sounds.

The album concludes with the countrified "Chicken Grit," where Ashby's guitar skills shine with what he describes as "chicken pickin' guitar." The track exudes a playful energy, providing a fitting end to the musical odyssey.

Throughout "Arkadia Blues," Richard Ashby skillfully weaves together a tapestry of influences, creating a sonic experience that transcends traditional blues boundaries. The infusion of jazz, funk, and country elements adds layers of complexity, making the album a testament to Ashby's ability to navigate diverse musical landscapes. Each track is a chapter in a bluesy exploration, and Ashby's solo venture proves to be a captivating and enjoyable ride for listeners.
