Max Kaplan & the Magics – Mind on My Heart

Color Red Music

8 songs – 28 minutes

Max Kaplan, a native New Yorker deeply entrenched in the love of Memphis blues, funk, and soul, debuts with "Mind on My Heart," an eight-track album that effortlessly blends classic, old-school vibes with modern flair. A guitarist and vocalist, Kaplan's musical journey reflects a rich tapestry of influences, from James Brown and B.B. King to Al Green and the Staple Singers. His relocation to Memphis as an adult was a deliberate move to channel these influences and contribute his unique voice to the city's musical legacy.

Co-produced by Kaplan, Jad Tiriq, and John Németh bandmates Jon Hay and Matthew Wilson, "Mind on My Heart" was recorded at Queen of Tuck Studios and The Harbert House. With a stellar lineup of musicians, including Al Gamble, Gerald Stephens, Jon Hay, Jad Tariq, Matthew Wilson, Art Edmaiston, Marc Franklin, Danny Banks, and Alic Hasen, the album delivers a tight and soulful sound that pays homage to the Memphis tradition.

The opening track, "She's Cryin'," sets the stage with Max Kaplan's vocals describing a stormy scenario, both meteorologically and emotionally. The analog reference adds a retro touch, offering a glimpse into Kaplan's influences from a bygone era. The cover of Ann Peebles' "99 Pounds" follows, showcasing Kaplan's ability to reinterpret classics. "Born to Love You" slows things down with a ballad that builds in intensity, expressing the aftermath of a romance's downside.

"Company" sweetens the mood, and "Shake (All Your Good Mama Gave You)" injects a dose of funk that beckons listeners to the dance floor. "Mind on My Heart" reflects on the challenges of making ends meet and appreciating steadfast companionship, while the quiet ballad "Loving, I'm Leaving" conveys a departure with regret and a cautionary note about the treacherous nature of romance.

The album closes with "What Kind of Fool," an original composition that delves into the complexities of relationships, showcasing Kaplan's soulful vocals and a mix of torment and emotional depth.

"Mind on My Heart" successfully walks the fine line between romance and heartbreak, capturing the essence of classic Memphis music. Max Kaplan's contemporary take on soul-blues offers a well-balanced and enjoyable listening experience. If you have an affinity for soulful sounds rooted in Memphis tradition, this debut album is a must-listen.
