Deguello Records – 2023
13 tracks; 55 minutes
Jeff Pitchell, a seasoned bluesman with a career spanning back to the late '90s, presents his ninth album, "Playin’ With My Friends," a nostalgic journey through blues, rock, and soul. This collection, spanning 13 tracks over 55 minutes, showcases Pitchell's diverse musical influences and features an impressive lineup of guest musicians.
Opening with "Eye For An Eye," a solid shuffle with clean guitar lines, Pitchell sets the tone for an album filled with bluesy prowess. The pounding rocker "Prisoner Of Love" follows, fueled by a dynamic horn section and female backing vocals, setting a lively pace for what's to come.
Pitchell's rendition of Atlanta Rhythm Section’s "So Into You" brings a smooth sound, complemented by Charles Neville's silky sax accompaniment. The album takes a bluesy turn with "Your Magic Eyes," where Pitchell's jagged riffs lead into a tale of seduction.
The album's midsection features collaborative tracks with guest guitarists, adding layers to Pitchell's sonic landscape. "Out In The Cold" sees Pitchell sharing vocals and guitar duties with Tyrone Vaughan, while "All Night Long" is a full-throttle rock and roll tribute to love with a touch of country, featuring Duane Betts's masterful guitar work. The gritty Rick Derringer joins Pitchell on vocals and guitar for "Unsung Hero Of The Blues," adding a distinct edge to the track.
"Fat Cigars," a reprise of the title track from Pitchell's 1997 album, captures the essence of blues storytelling. The album progresses with "Blinded By Desire," a chugging rocker that gives way to the retro 50’s style of "I Like The Rut," where Pitchell wears multiple hats, playing guitar, bass, and drums.
Closing with two remarkable covers, Pitchell pays homage to blues legends. The live reprise of "Playin’ With My Friends" features Claudette King, daughter of BB King, delivering raspy vocals alongside Pitchell's BB King-style guitar solo. The album concludes on a high note with a soulful rendition of Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland's classic, "I Wouldn't Treat A Dog."
"Playin’ With My Friends" is a testament to Pitchell's longevity in the blues scene and his ability to collaborate seamlessly with a diverse array of musicians. Whether revisiting classics or presenting original compositions, Pitchell's blues journey is one of authenticity, skill, and a heartfelt connection with his musical friends.
