Blue Heart Records – 2023
9 tracks; 36 minutes
Irish singer and guitarist Gráinne Duffy has once again graced the blues scene with her fifth album, "Dirt Woman Blues," a collection that showcases her musical evolution since her debut in 2007. This time, Gráinne brings a dynamic mix of blues, rock, soul, and Celtic influences, recorded in California with the notable duo of Marc Ford (Black Crowes) and Chris Goldsmith producing.
The nine-track album, totaling 36 minutes, features a blend of original compositions written in collaboration with Gráinne's husband, Paul Sherry. The lineup includes Gráinne on vocals and guitar, Paul and Marc on guitars, Elijah Ford (Gary Clark Jr.'s rhythm section) on bass, keys, and B/V’s, JJ Johnson on drums, with John Ginty and Peter Levin contributing keys to select tracks. Sam Goldsmith adds additional piano, percussion, and vocals.
The album kicks off with the assertive "Well, Well, Well," setting a heavier tone with impressive twin guitar work and an exciting slide performance, while Gráinne outlines her life plans. The title track, "Dirt Woman Blues," takes a turn to the Delta, offering an earthy and impassioned vocal delivery, complemented by a moody accompaniment and a distorted title line that adds depth.
Bringing a romantic touch, "What’s It Going To Be" offers a bright, catchy rhythm, followed by "Running Back To You," a tune with a delightful 1960s R&B feel, reminiscent of early Beatles influences. "Rise Above" showcases a strong rhythm set by drummer JJ, with clear Celtic connections, enhancing the album's diversity. "Sweet Liberation" then takes the listener on a Southern Rock-infused journey, featuring a boogie-driven finale.
"Hold On To You" shifts gears with a ballad, allowing Gráinne to showcase vulnerability in her voice, while "Yes I Will" unfolds as a defiant anthem with a rock-infused arrangement and intense guitar riffs. Closing the album is "Killycrum," a heartfelt homage to Gráinne's roots in County Monaghan, Ireland. Acoustic guitar sets a pastoral tone, weaving lyrical references to comfort and the essence of things being as they should.
Comparisons to Bonnie Raitt may arise, but Gráinne Duffy establishes her unique presence in the musical landscape with "Dirt Woman Blues." The album offers a varied and passionate musical journey, displaying skillful musicianship and cementing Gráinne's position as a distinctive force in contemporary blues. This collection is undoubtedly worth a listen, inviting audiences to explore the rich tapestry of Gráinne Duffy's musical world.
