Coco Montoya – Writing On The Wall

13 tracks; 59 minutes

Coco Montoya, the revered blues guitarist and vocalist, is back with his sixth offering on Alligator Records, titled "Writing On The Wall." Following his 2019 release "Coming In Hot," Coco returns with a lineup of soulful tracks that exemplify his mastery of both the guitar and vocal realms. Backed by his seasoned road band, the album features thirteen tracks, including originals and carefully selected covers, with production handled by Tony Braunagel.

The album kicks off with the dynamic duo of Dave Steen-penned tunes. "I Was Wrong" sets the tone with Coco's powerful vocals and expressive guitar work. His ability to convey emotion through both voice and strings immediately draws listeners into the album. The catchy "Save It For The Next Fool" follows suit, showcasing Coco's signature guitar tone and a memorable melody.

Throughout the album, Coco's guitar work remains a highlight. In tracks like "What Did I Say?" and the Lonnie Mack cover "Stop," his playing is not about flashy displays but a nuanced, soulful approach that perfectly complements the lyrical content. Coco understands the power of restraint, allowing the essence of the blues to shine through in every note.

The holiday-themed "The Three Kings And Me" introduces a unique perspective, where Coco finds solace in the company of blues legends Albert, BB, and Freddie during Christmas. The slow, reflective nature of the song perfectly captures the spirit of the season while staying true to the blues.

The album seamlessly transitions between slower numbers and energetic rockers. Lee Roy Parnell's slide work adds a dramatic touch to "A Chip And A Chair," a tale of resilience and staying in the game. "Be Good To Yourself," a cover previously recorded by artists like Frankie Miller and Delbert McClinton, gets a soulful treatment, with Coco infusing his own flavor into the well-loved track.

Collaborating with Ronnie Baker Brooks on "Baby, You're A Drag" and "You Got Me (Where You Want Me)," Coco engages in playful banter and shared guitar solos. These tracks not only showcase the camaraderie between the two artists but also demonstrate their mutual love for the blues.

As the album concludes with "Natural Born Love Machine," Coco and his band hit a groove that underlines their chemistry. Nathan Brown's thumping bass and Jeff Paris's keys, coupled with Coco's guitar finesse, create a captivating finale.

"Writing On The Wall" is a testament to Coco Montoya's unwavering commitment to the blues. His ability to seamlessly blend storytelling with soul-stirring guitar performances is a testament to his status as a blues virtuoso. With a mix of original compositions and carefully selected covers, Coco delivers an album that both honors tradition and adds a fresh chapter to his storied career. For fans of authentic, soulful blues, Coco Montoya's "Writing On The Wall" is a must-listen.
