Chris Beard's 'Pass It On Down': A Modern Blues Testament

Chris Beard – Pass It On Down

10 tracks; 44 minutes

In the rich tapestry of blues heritage, Chris Beard stands as a torchbearer of tradition and innovation. His latest offering, "Pass It On Down," released under Blue Heart Records in 2023, not only pays homage to his deep roots but also marks a significant stride forward in his musical journey. With ten tracks clocking in at 44 minutes, this album seamlessly weaves together remastered classics and fresh recordings, showcasing Beard's prowess as a guitarist, vocalist, and storyteller.

Born into a musical dynasty, Beard inherited the guitar at the tender age of five, setting the stage for a career steeped in the blues. Growing up amidst legends like Buddy Guy and Matt 'Guitar' Murphy, Beard's musical DNA is imprinted with authenticity and passion. "Pass It On Down" reflects not only his familial ties but also his commitment to pushing the blues envelope.

The album kicks off with remastered tracks from the 2015 album "Eye Of The Witch." "When Love Come Knocking" and "Let the Chips Fall" infuse funk into the blues, with horn stabs adding a vibrant layer. The ballads "Keeps Me Believing," "House Of Shame," and "One More Cry For Love" showcase Beard's emotive depth and poignant storytelling, leaving an indelible mark.

As the journey unfolds, Beard introduces us to new recordings that demonstrate his evolution and versatility. "Big Girl" sizzles with an uptempo groove, while "Who Do You Think You're Foolin'" blends rap-like vocals with a horn-infused blues landscape. "Bitter Baby" reveals a slower, introspective side, letting the piano take center stage.

The collaboration with blues icon Kenny Neal on "Son I Never Knew" adds another layer of depth to the album. The reworked rendition of Bob Greenlee's composition resonates with soulful intensity, showcasing Beard's interpretive skills.

The generational exchange occurs poignantly on the title track, "Pass It On Down," where Chris Beard and his father, Joe, share vocals and guitar. Co-written with Johnny Rawls, this autobiographical piece is a testament to the enduring legacy of blues in the Beard family.

Chris Beard's ability to balance ballads with up-tempo blues underscores his versatility as a modern bluesman. Whether delving into heart-wrenching narratives or delivering soulful grooves, Beard's guitar work remains a constant, painting vivid sonic landscapes.

"Pass It On Down" is not just an album; it's a testament to the timelessness of blues music and its ability to traverse generations. Chris Beard, with his deep roots and contemporary flair, invites listeners to join him on a blues journey that passes down the torch from one generation to the next.
