Blues Arcadia Delivers a Soulful Punch with "Now Or Never"

Blues Arcadia – Now or Never

Self-Release

11 songs – 41 minutes

It's been four years since Blues Arcadia's acclaimed "Carnival Of Fools," and the Australian band is back with their latest offering, "Now Or Never." This self-released album, spanning 11 tracks in 41 minutes, confidently sidesteps any challenges of the so-called "difficult second album." Instead, it delivers a well-crafted collection of original songs that seamlessly traverse the realms of blues, soul, and rock, earning the band's self-description of "dirty soul."

Comprising Alan Boyle (vocals), Paula Girvan (keyboards), Jeremy Klysz (bass), Casper Hall (drums), and Chris Harvey (guitar), Blues Arcadia offers an exciting sonic experience. The rhythm section, provided by Klysz and Hall, lays down irresistible grooves, setting the stage for Girvan and Harvey to weave intricate, funky rhythm parts and captivating solos.

Boyle's soulful and passionate vocals are a perfect match for the band's dynamic sound. All the tracks on "Now Or Never" are self-written by Boyle and Harris, showcasing a clever lyricism and consistently unexpected song structures.

The album benefits from contributions by guest musicians Clint Allen and Dan Quigley on trumpet, Cassie Whitehead on tenor saxophone, and Alex Price on tenor and baritone saxophone.

Recorded by Jeff Lovejoy at Blackbox Studios in Queensland, Australia, with additional recording by Casper Hall at Sound Out Studios, and mastered by Matthew Gray, the production team deserves credit for capturing the band's blistering performances with pristine clarity.

The opening track, "Dollar Bill," serves as a strong introduction, featuring Harvey's edgy guitar leading into a funky groove and an infectious chorus. Throughout the album, Blues Arcadia navigates a musical landscape reminiscent of the second Jeff Beck Group from the early '70s, blending blues, soul, funk, and rock seamlessly. "Cry Baby" captures a Clapton-esque vibe from the '80s, while "Follow The Leader" stands out as the funkiest track on the record.

"Feets Don’t Fail Me Now" explores blues-soul territory with Girvan's dreamy chord progressions, and the closing ballad, "More Than Less," starts with a jazz-tinged guitar and Boyle's voice before the full band joins in. Noteworthy is Girvan's standout piano work on the title track.

In essence, Blues Arcadia's "Now Or Never" is an impressive release that showcases the band's musical prowess and knack for crafting enjoyable, genre-blurring compositions. For those seeking a soulful yet bluesy journey, this album is a must-listen.
