Blue Largo, a Southern California band formed in 1999 by guitarist Eric Lieberman and vocalist Alicia Aragon, returns with their latest offering, "Got To Believe." With a rich history in the music scene, including a thirteen-year hiatus due to Eric's health struggles, the band has triumphantly overcome obstacles to deliver an album brimming with soulful blues experiences.
The album kicks off with "A World Without Soul," a swinging track that sets the tone with a captivating groove and delightful horns. Alicia Aragon's vocals, seasoned by years of experience, guide us through a song of hope, complemented by impressive piano and guitar solos. The title track, "Got To Believe," follows suit, exuding optimism with a touch of nostalgia, reminiscent of the early '60s sound.
"Soul Meeting" takes a turn into a ballad of spiritual reunion in the afterlife, featuring thoughtful guitar solos and churchy organ accompaniment. The rocking "What We Gotta Do" urges us to do what's necessary, driven by a dynamic piano solo and Aragon's impassioned vocals. "Disciple of Soul," a tribute to Little Steven Van Zandt, stands out with its bouncing vibe and instrumental interlude, serving as the catalyst for the band's return to the studio.
The band delivers a soulful rendition of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," showcasing Aragon's powerful vocals and accompanied by slick guitar solos and masterful organ and piano work. "Soldier in the Army of Love" emerges as a poignant anthem against oppression, dedicated to the people of Ukraine. "Ronnie" narrates the story of piano player Taryn's mentor, Ronnie Lane, with a heartfelt piano solo capturing the essence of the tale.
"Gospel Music" pays homage to the power of music and Gospel rhythms, infusing a bouncy and jumping energy. "Rear View Mirror," a soulful and slow reflection on aging, features a thoughtful guitar and sax solo. The album concludes with "Santa Fe Bound," a countrified blues song with honky-tonk piano and pedal steel guitar, adding a touch of Western flair.
"Got To Believe" is a joyous and cohesive album that reflects the camaraderie and shared passion of Blue Largo. With ten originals and a slick cover, the band's enjoyment of playing together shines through. Blue Largo invites listeners on a vibrant blues journey, making "Got To Believe" a worthwhile addition to your music collection.
