The Sirens – 2022
11 tracks; 51 minutes In the realm of gospel music, Bishop Dwayne Mason stands as a revered figure, having caught the attention of celebrated blues pianist Erwin Helfer back in 2002. Fast forward to 2022, and Bishop Dwayne Mason, now a Bishop and deeply involved in ministry, graces us with his latest release, "Just Can’t Make It By Myself," a testament to his enduring passion for gospel.
Recorded across three sessions in 2019-2020 and released under The Sirens label, this 11-track album weaves a soulful tapestry of gospel melodies, featuring the Bishop's profound musicality and collaborations with talented musicians. The lineup includes Curtis Daniel, Leonard Maddox, and Eugene Ross III on keyboards, accompanied by a solid rhythm section comprising Richard Gibbs on bass, Christopher Jones, and Michael Eason sharing drum duties. Additional percussive elements are provided by Antoine Taylor Jr. and Ayden Taylor on tambourine.
The first session introduces Eugene Ross III, whose vocals and piano skills shine on "Lord Help Me To Hold Out," a spirited gospel classic, and "He Looked Beyond My Faults," a slow and contemplative piece enriched with powerful organ sweeps by Bishop Dwayne Mason. The duo collaborates on "Jesus, That’s My King," where the Bishop showcases his versatility on both piano and organ, allowing Ross to deliver emotive vocals.
The second session, featuring Dr. Curtis E Daniel, presents a vibrant rendition of "I Love Jesus," blending jaunty rhythms with increasing intensity. The venerable Mother Vernon Oliver Price takes the spotlight on two tracks: "I Just Can’t Make It By Myself," a soulful ballad, and the expansive closer "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power," a captivating showcase of gospel's emotive power. Daniel contributes a bluesy instrumental, "I’m Sealed Till The Day Of Redemption," marking the session's conclusion.
The third session features Leonard Maddox on organ and Bishop Dwayne Mason on piano, resulting in a quartet of instrumentals that span the gospel spectrum. "Jesus Will" exudes a gentle groove, "Search Me Lord" races along with fervor, "Speak To My Heart" embodies sentimental balladry, and "I’ve Got A Testimony" uplifts with an up-tempo, jazzy flair.
While gospel might not be my expertise, the musicality and spirit emanating from "Just Can’t Make It By Myself" are undeniable. Bishop Dwayne Mason's passion for the genre, coupled with the talents of his friends, crafts an album that transcends its religious context, offering a soulful experience for any listener. If you cherish gospel music, this release is a worthy addition to your collection, a testament to the enduring power and beauty of this musical tradition.
